90% passed Icelandic language test for citizenship
10th July 2024
The Icelandic language test for citizenship was held from 14 to 31 May. It is a pleasure to report that 90% of the 460 who took the test met the basic requirements for Icelandic knowledge for Icelandic citizenship.
One of the requirements for becoming an Icelandic citizen is a basic mastery of the Icelandic language. The government uses an Icelandic language test to assess the proficiency of applicants for Icelandic citizenship. The spring session of the test was held in May, with 460 applicants taking the test. The Directorate of Education and School Services is pleased to report that 90% of the applicants met the minimum requirements for Icelandic citizenship.
The main purpose of the test is to assess whether an applicant can use the Icelandic language in common situations at the workplace, school, and in private life. The test content is based on the curriculum guides of the Ministry of Children and Education and corresponds to the A1-A2 skill levels of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The test materials require participants to understand simple conversations, participate in discussions on familiar topics, understand the main points in television, radio, or newspaper coverage, read short texts using common vocabulary, and write short texts in simple language.
The fall session of the test will take place in late November to early December 2024. Test dates and locations will be advertised on the website www.mimir.is.
