Widgets for digital government licenses

26th August 2025

From September 1st, digital government license will only be available in the Ísland.is app and no longer in the wallets of smartphones.

The change is made to ensure security and improve access to the licences for users. Following presentation and consultation with issuers of digital licences, the withdrawal from phone wallets officially began on July 1st, 2025, where new licences were no longer issued in phone books. Those who already have digital licences installed in their phone wallet apps have access to them until the end of August. Digital licences will be removed from phone wallets altogether on September 1st.

Digital licenses in the Ísland.is app

Those who want to use digital licences on their phones after September 1st need to do so through the Ísland.is app. After downloading the app, users can set up a widget on their phone display in a simple manner, whether it is an iPhone or an Android device.

Currently available digital licences are: drivers licence, machine and ADR rights, firearms licence, hunting license and disability card, and additionally, information is available in the app about users' passports, the European Health Insurance Card, parking card (p-card), and new identity cards issued by the National Registry. Digital licences are valid only in Iceland, and therefore it is important that those who intend to drive abroad carry a traditional driving licence.

The issue of digital driving licences by public institutions in Iceland began in the summer of 2020. Digital driving licences were first issued for Android and iPhone smartphones. Likewise, information about licences and the possibilities for renewal will continue to be supplied on Ísland.is My pages.
