Court hearings

Court hearings in the Court of Appeal take place on Thursdays at 15.00.
Court decisions are usually published an hour later.

Mid-judicial level

The Court of Appeal was founded under Act No. 50/2016 and was established on January 2, 2018. It is the mid-judicial level, situated between the district courts and the Supreme Court of Iceland.

The rulings of the eight regional courts can be appealed to the Court of Justice of Iceland and become final in most cases. In special cases or after the permission of the Supreme Court of Iceland, the conclusions of the Court of Justice can be appealed to the Supreme Court.

The Court of Appeal resides in the Reykjavik Metropolitan Area but covers the entire country.

Referees

Sixeen judges sit on the Court of Appeal. They are appointed for an indefinite period of time. Three judges form the bench in each case and decide the right of appeal, and whether an appeal will be heard. In certain circumstances there are five judges.

President of the National Court

The President and Vice President are elected for five years at a time. The President of the Court appoints the President of the Court for five years and appoints lawyers and other staff members.
