Notification of a car rental’s storage location

Those who wish to rent out registered vehicles without a driver must obtain an operating permit from the Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA). A car rental must have a storage location where the registered vehicles are kept.

A car rental may, on the basis of its operating permit, have storage locations in more than one municipality. In such cases, the car rental must notify the ICETRA of the storage locations. A positive opinion from the respective municipal authority must be provided.

  1. The applicant must hold a valid operating permit issued by the ICETRA

  2. ICETRA will send a request for an opinion regarding the location of the storage facility to the relevant municipality

  3. The storage facility is approved once a positive opinion from the municipality has been received

Supporting documents

  • Consent from the owner of the storage facility, if the owner is not the holder of the car rental permit

Processing of applications

  • Processing of applications depends on the time required by the relevant municipality to provide its opinion on the storage facility

  • A request for an opinion is sent once all required documents related to the application has been received by ICETRA. The municipality is asked to provide its opinion within 30 days.
