Warning of theft in the city centre

The capital area police are warning of thieves who have been traveling in the city centre in recent days.

They are said to be foreign citizens and attack tourists and have received notices of such cases at Hallgrímskirkja and its surroundings. The thieves are often two or more at a time and steal from pockets, bags and backpacks of people, both in public places and accommodations. They are dressed like tourists, if you will, and also have backpacks with them.

It is believed that the same thieves were recently at well-known tourist sites in South Iceland and stole them in the same manner. For example, they spread the tourists’ attention by offering to take pictures of them, but during this time the thieves were caught by the tail.
