Voting rights of foreign nationals in municipal elections on 14 May 2022

According to information from the Icelandic National Registry, there are 31,702 foreign nationals who have the right to vote in upcoming municipal elections.

Voting rights in elections to the municipal council are to be owned;

  • Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish nationals who have reached the age of 18 at the time of election and are registered as domiciled in the municipality;

  • other foreign nationals who have been registered as domiciled in Iceland for three consecutive years prior to election day, who have reached the age of 18 at the time of election and are registered as domiciled in the municipality.

According to information from the Icelandic National Registry, there are 31,702 foreign nationals who have the right to vote in upcoming municipal elections.

The ten largest groups of foreign nationals on the electoral roll at the municipal elections are:

1. Polish citizens on the electoral roll - 13,542

2. Lithuanian citizens on the electoral roll - 2,902

3. Latvian citizens on the electoral roll - 1,269

4. Romanian citizens on the electoral roll - 1,155

5. German citizens on the electoral roll - 971

6. Danish citizens on the electoral roll - 857

7. Portuguese nationals on the electoral roll - 856

8. British citizens on the electoral roll - 788

9. Spanish citizens on the electoral roll - 696

10. Filipino nationals on the electoral roll - 679
