Since 2002, Iceland has participated in a concerted effort by European municipalities to promote sustainable transport. The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change is responsible for the week in Iceland.

This week aims to introduce to the urban population transportation methods that are both environmentally friendly and economical and improve people’s health while positively impacting the environment and atmosphere.

Associations and municipalities will hold events, but information on the week’s agenda can be obtained on the website of the Government of Iceland, on the websites of the municipalities, as well as on the event's Facebook page .

The Icelandic Transport Authority will held a traffic convention on Friday, September 20.

The week ends with the car-free day, on 22 September, when the public is encouraged to leave their car at home and to make it easier, buses in the countryside and the capital area will be free of charge.
