Temporary Position: Sign Language Interpreter

The Communication Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is inviting applications for the position of Sign Language Interpreter. This is a fixed-term position for up to 12 months.

Key Responsibilities

Sign Language Interpreters are part of the Interpretation Department at the Communication Centre. Their primary responsibilities include interpreting and translating in Icelandic Sign Language. In addition, interpreters contribute to other projects and tasks within the Centre's scope of work as assigned.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Sign Language Studies and Sign Language Interpreting.

  • Excellent proficiency in Icelandic Sign Language.

  • Excellent command of spoken and written Icelandic.

  • Good command of English is desirable.

  • A valid driver's licence is an advantage.

  • Previous experience in sign language interpreting is an asset.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a service-oriented attitude, punctuality, and good organisational skills.

The Communication Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is the national language centre for Icelandic Sign Language and serves the Icelandic sign language community. Salary is determined in accordance with the collective agreement between the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and Viska – The Union.

All interviews will be conducted in both Icelandic and Icelandic Sign Language. Applicants should be prepared to undergo an assessment of their Icelandic Sign Language proficiency and interpreting skills.

This is an on-site position. The successful candidate will primarily work at the Centre's offices and at interpreting assignments in the Reykjavík Capital Area and neighbouring municipalities.

The position is a full-time (100%) daytime position, with opportunities for demand-based overtime during evenings and weekends. Part-time employment may also be considered.

Applicants should preferably be available to work from 1 October 2026 until 10 June 2027. However, both the start and end dates of the fixed-term appointment are flexible.
