Temporary closure of the operating room at East Iceland District Hospital in Neskaupstaður

Due to necessary renovations and maintenance of the premises, the operating room at the East Iceland District Hospital in Neskaupstaður will be closed from 8 July 2026 to 14 August 2026. The construction is part of the planned renovation of the hospital premises that has been underway in recent years.
During the closure, it will not be possible to offer surgical or obstetric services at the East Iceland District Hospital in Neskaupstaður.
However, HSA surgeons and anesthesiologists will continue to be able to provide assistance with simpler interventions under sedation if necessary.
HSA midwives will remain on duty during the period and will be located either in Egilsstaðir or in Fjarðabyggð, depending on the needs of the service.
Emergency services will be guaranteed at all times. Pre-planned operations and most urgent cases requiring surgical or anesthesia services will be referred to the Akureyri Hospital or Landspítali, depending on the nature of the case and clinical assessment.
HSA apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and thanks the residents of East Iceland for their understanding while necessary improvements are made that will improve the facility and support service for the future.
