Strengthening Family Bonds to Support Children’s Mental Health
HSN staff recently explored Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT), an approach designed to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and support the family as a whole.

When a child or other members of a family are experiencing emotional difficulties, the support and involvement of the family as a whole can make a significant difference. Representatives from the Mental Health Team and Child Psychology Services at HSN recently attended a workshop on Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT), an approach that focuses on strengthening the bond between children and parents while supporting the family as a whole.
The workshop took place at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Department of Landspítali on September 3, in connection with the annual BUGL conference. The keynote speaker and guest lecturer was Dr. Guy Diamond, Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States and one of the founders of Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT).
During the workshop, HSN staff were introduced to methods that can help families improve communication, enhance feelings of safety, and strengthen relationships when a child, adolescent, and their family are facing challenges. The therapy is based, among other things, on research and knowledge related to attachment, emotional regulation, and the impact of adverse experiences.Participation in the workshop is part of HSN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen family-centred services. The Child Mental Health Team is currently considering the implementation of ABFT for children and families seeking support from the team. Research has shown that family involvement and strong support for the family can improve treatment outcomes. Children are greatly influenced by their environment and circumstances. Their well-being cannot be fully understood without also considering their relationships and the environment in which they live.
HSN representatives also attended the BUGL conference, titled The Magic of Connection. The conference highlighted the importance of secure and strong relationships for the well-being, welfare, and development of children and adolescents. Some HSN staff members followed the conference via livestream.
