Straumurinn receives European recognition

Icelandic infrastructure for secure data exchange has received European recognition.

Straumurinn has now been recognised as an important solution by the Interoperable Europe Portal, which is the European Union's platform for solutions that support interoperability and secure data exchange between public bodies.

What is Straumurinn?

Straumurinn is a data exchange layer that enables institutions to share data between themselves in a secure and traceable manner. The system is based on a distributed architecture, without centralised data storage. All data is therefore stored at the institution that owns the data and is only shared securely when needed.

Straumurinn facilitates cooperation between public bodies because there is no need to build a special connection between each one. All public institutions and municipalities in the country can use the system to transfer their data, with the aim of improving services to the public.

Simpler services for people and businesses

The goal is for public bodies to be able to use data that already exists, so that data moves between institutions, not people. Many of the public sector's digital services rely on Straumurinn to retrieve and share information, thus supporting simpler and more efficient services.

Next step: X-Road 8

This recognition comes at the same time as preparations are underway for a new version, X-Road 8, which is expected to be launched later this year. This new version will be a major step in the development of Straumurinn and will provide us with a more flexible infrastructure designed for cloud solutions.
