SAk rehabilitation services to relocate from Kristnes indefinitely

A decision has been made to relocate SAk’s rehabilitation services from their current premises at Kristnes for an indefinite period. The decision follows a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the building, which concluded that, in its current condition, it is unsuitable for the provision of healthcare services.

Work is underway to establish the day rehabilitation and outpatient components of the service in new premises in Akureyri, covering 815 square metres. The aim is for operations to commence there in September, with capacity to provide day rehabilitation and outpatient services to up to 20 clients per day. In addition, six inpatient rehabilitation beds will be brought into use at SAk’s surgical ward from 4 August.

These changes will inevitably affect the organisation of rehabilitation services, as well as other areas of the hospital’s operations. To create additional space within the hospital for patients and clinical staff, temporary accommodation solutions on the SAk campus are being explored for employees who do not work directly with patients.

“We are committed to safeguarding rehabilitation services, as well as SAk’s other services, despite these challenging accommodation circumstances, as these services are of great importance to patients and their families. A substantial task lies ahead, requiring collaboration, solution-focused thinking and flexibility. SAk has both the expertise and the determination needed to ensure high-quality care. I am confident that, through a joint effort, we will overcome these challenges while laying the foundations for a strong and sustainable rehabilitation service for the future,” says Guðjón Hauksson, CEO of SAk (Akureyri Hospital).
