Our scientists - Rannveig Elíasdóttir

The positions at the School of Education and Science are intended for permanently employed staff in higher education who reduce their work due to scientific work. This summer we plan to learn about researchers in these positions and their projects. Now it is time for Rannveig Elíasdóttir, nurse in the pediatric ward.

Our scientists – Rannveig Elíasdóttir

Status of education: I am well on my way with a M.Sc. research project.

Title: Health of primary school children in Akureyri– Relationship of body composition to well-being.

Instructors: Árún K. Sigurðardóttir and Kjartan Ólafsson.

Expected graduation date: October 2024.

Why is your research important?

Research indicates that obesity among children and adolescents is increasing in Iceland, especially in rural areas. However, the only specialized multidisciplinary resource in the capital area is in Iceland. My hope is that with the results we can demonstrate the need for such a resource here in SAk. By providing specialized treatment for children and adolescents who are obese with evidence-based and individualized methods we are not only improving their health and well-being today but for years to come and also saving money in the whole healthcare system.

How has SAk supported you in your scientific work?

I have been on a 15% student leave from my work last winter to work on the project and it has been very beneficial to me.

How has your scientific work enhanced you?

I would say that everything I have listed in the question above has been greatly enhanced.

What was the most surprising to you?

That time is a finite resource ;)

The study places at the Faculty of Education and Science are for permanent students in higher education who are reduced in their work due to scientific work. In the coming weeks we will learn about these researchers and their projects.
