New portal to report cypercrimes

The Minister of Justice opened a new digital portal for the public to reports cybercrimes.

The portal enables the public, companies and institutions to report cybercrime in a simple, secure and accessible way. The educational section provides information on what to watch out for and how to protect yourself from such crimes.

The portal is an important step in the fight against cybercrime, and it also emphasises education, prevention and a swift response to cybercrime. The aim is to raise public awareness of online fraud and simplify the notifications process.

“Cybercrime and online financial fraud are no longer isolated offences – they have become part of international organised crime. By collecting information in one place, we strengthen the police's ability to analyse patterns, respond more quickly and work systematically against organised crime. We are building a system that allows us to see the bigger picture – and respond to it decisively,” says Þorbjörg S. Gunnlaugsdóttir, Minister of Justice.

Focus on financial fraud

Initially, a special emphasis will be placed on financial fraud, which is one of the most common and harmful online crimes today. Such crimes not only cause financial damage but can also undermine trust in society.

With the new notifications portal, it is possible to send formal notifications to the police if a crime has occurred or a tip about an attempted cybercrime. The process is simple and user-friendly. The notifications received help the police to analyse patterns in the crimes that occur at any given time, warn against them and combat them.

By simplifying notifications about financial fraud and strengthening education, society's defences against online fraud are reinforced, transparency is increased and services for those who experience or become aware of such criminal activity are improved. The portal can be accessed here.
