Improved Access to Vaccines for Adults
In recent weeks, two vaccines have been introduced in Iceland for adults in high-risk groups. One is for herpes zoster (shingles), and the other is for pneumococcal infections.

For the first time, guidance on the use of the herpes zoster (shingles) vaccine has been published in Iceland, alongside updated recommendations on the use of pneumococcal vaccines.
The herpes zoster vaccine is self-funded by individuals. However, for people in risk groups for pneumococcal disease, the Icelandic Health Insurance has established a reimbursement policy covering all pneumococcal vaccines included in the recommendations of the Chief Epidemiologist. This means that eligible individuals may apply to the Icelandic Health Insurance for reimbursement on a case-by-case basis.
