Ísland.is wins UT-award
Ísland. received the IT Award 2024 in the IT - Digital Public Service category. The awards were given at the IT fair /UTmessan last Friday, one of Iceland's biggest computer sector events.
The IT Awards are awarded for outstanding contributions to IT in Iceland. The award is given by the Icelandic Technology Association (Ský) and has been awarded annually since 2010. Miðeind was awarded for outstanding contributions to IT last year and in addition, five categories were awarded:
Ísland.is was awarded as the IT-Digital Public Service.
Digital advancement at Landspítali was chosen as the IT company.
Indó was awarded the IT-Sprotinn award.

The success of Ísland.is is a testament to how outstanding Iceland is when it comes to digitizing the public sector. The key is to improve services for those who live and work in Iceland, which Ísland.is has certainly done. It has, and will continue to do, helping us to increase productivity and streamline the state’s operations. The skills and strength that are found in the teams involved in the project are a great example. I am proud of everyone contributing to the Ísland.is community and that the projects achievments have been noticed abroad.

The review for the nomination states that it is in part that simplicity and good accessibility characterize Ísland.is despite the complex interaction of many public bodies both physically and technically. “More than 250 people stand behind the Ísland.is community and contribute to the project, but such a thing requires great discipline for everyone to work towards the same goal. Examples of projects have been done at the District Commissioners such as electronic registrations, pre-registration of passports, digital estates etc. This work results in increased efficiency and service. In addition, 25 institutions and public projects have moved their web to Ísland.is and the same number has already started implementation. Behind Ísland.is is also an application system that talks to Ísland.is My Pages and the Ísland.is app, and service pages that support common user questions, a chatbot that resolves user queries. Ísland.is gets people directly to the service they are looking for and more and more public services can be completed fully in self-service,” the review states.
Ísland.is aims to simplify people’s lives and make it easier to access digital government services through a single portal. The website has seen a steady increase in check-ins, which is today about 1.5 million visits per month on average.
The website is among the core services of Digital Iceland, which has the role of supporting the digital journey of public sector entities. Digital Iceland is part of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and operates under the auspices of the Digital Policy for the Public sector.
