General driving training framework digitalised

All processes that drivers, driving instructors, and driving schools use through driving studies are now digital.

The General Driving Training (B-credit) framework has now become digital. All processes that drivers, driving instructors, and driving schools use due to their studies have become digital and therefore no paperwork. The objective of the project was to simplify the driving learning process, improve service and reduce contact areas between institutions.

"We welcome this great milestone as it will undoubtedly improve the service for students and driving instructors. It is no longer necessary to drive as often between government outlets and the use of paper has been reduced by saying goodbye to the application forms and driving study booklet. The improvement of the digital framework is the result of good cooperation between the public sector institutions and we continue to strive to improve digital services in the driving program in the next steps in the project,"

says Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, Minister of Infrastructure.

What is there to do digitally now?

Numerous digital processes have now been implemented through Ísland.is, with connections to the institutions involved in the driving study. This means that we can now:

  • Driving students apply to start driving studies online, monitor their progress, and retrieve a digital driving license once they have passed a practical test.

  • Driving instructors confirm in digital form driving times, and driving evaluations and that the student is ready for a practice run.

  • Driving schools confirm digitally that students have completed a driving school.

  • Training instructors applied digitally to become instructors.

Applications and confirmations can be found at Ísland.is.

The driving student has access to his driving study book on Ísland.is My pages.

Next steps:

  • Councilors may use their signature and photo from their passport for issuing driving licenses.

  • Preparation with the Icelandic Transportation Authority for electronic examination in theoretical driving tests.

  • Continued collaboration on digital processes for other driving rights.

The project is under the supervision of the Icelandic Transport Agency, which has carried it out in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure, the regional commissioners, the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, and Digital Iceland.
