News release from the Chief of Police in Suðurnes
The police in Suðurnes want to draw the public’s attention to the fact that there are circumstances that require special caution at two popular destinations on Reykjanes.

Due to new fissures in Valahnúkur on the Reykjanestá river, it has been decided to warn against travel there until the matter has been evaluated by experts and other relevant parties. Work is being done to assess the safety of the area and further information will be issued as the matter develops. Cracks in Valahnúkur have been warned since 2016.
Valahnúkur is a weak pebble where the bridges keep crunching and has done so for decades. A warning sign is at the beginning of the hiking path on the ridge and the path is closed with fencing. Reykjanesbær has taken steps to increase the level of marking on the site because of this.
It is also important to warn against earthquakes or volcanic eruptions in the vicinity of the Intercontinental Bridge. These can be difficult to detect and can be difficult to detect, especially in poor visibility. Travellers are therefore advised to be careful and stay on marked trails in the area.
We remind that this announcement is made as a precautionary measure and ask people to exercise caution and respect the signs and instructions in the area.
