Flight accident training in the Westman Islands
News
A crash drill was held at Vestmannaeyjar Airport last Thursday. A plane carrying 22 people was supposed to have crashed on landing, causing many injuries and widespread fires.
Participation in the exercise and in the training in the previous days was very good. A total of 50 HSU employees participated, including ambulance workers, nurses, doctors, paramedics, health data scientists, receptionists, staff from the research department and imaging to name a few.
The exercise was driven from the accident scene to the injured’s area, which was in the terminal and well staffed by healthcare professionals. From there, the patients were either transported to HSU in islands where they were continued with for example X-rays, spelling and more, or the most injured were transported in a helicopter or plane, which did not actually transport the patients any further.
The exercise was considered to be a success and it was great to see such good participation from health care professionals, but it is very many years since the last exercise was driven all the way into the health care center.
Alongside the air accident drill, a new group accident program was run in islands and was successful. Normally, some crashes occur but for that, exactly such drills, to learn from them, improve procedures so that it is possible to ensure patient and staff safety.
Photos of the exercise, it should be noted that there were no actual patients.
