Fewer visits to the District Commissioner for driving licence applications

It is now possible to use the photo from a user's passport in all digital driving licence applications on Ísland.is. Applicants therefore no longer need to visit the District Commissioner to submit a photo.

Previously, applicants for a learner's permit had to attend in person with a passport photo on photographic paper and provide a signature. They can now select the photo from their passport in the application. Around 343,000 passports are currently valid, and applicants who have a photo in their passport can use it in this way.

Based on application figures for 2025, around 40,000 applications a year can make use of this solution. Of these, around 20,000 are applications for driving licence renewals, around 16,000 are applications from new learner drivers and for their full licenses, and around 4,000 are applications for a duplicate, or reprint, of a driving licence.

The project is a collaboration between the District Commissioners, the police, the Icelandic Transport Authority, Digital Iceland and Registers Iceland.
