Electronic collection of endorsements for presidential candidacy is now open at Ísland.is.

Electronic collection of endorsements for presidential candidacy is now open at Ísland.is. Candidates can establish a collection using electronic ID and then share a link to voters to endorse that particular candidate. Voters can then endorse that candidate or other candidates, but each voter can only endorse one candidate. If endorsers change their mind, they can withdraw their previous endorsement and endorse another candidate until the collection is closed. After that, the endorsement cannot be withdrawn.

Each candidate must submit 1,500 – 3,000 endorsements, divided by each quarter of the country. The number of endorsements in each quarter is divided as follows:

The Southern quarter: 1,233 to 2,465.

The Western quarter: 56 to 112.

The northern quarter: 157 to 314.

The eastern quarter: 54 to 109.

It is also allowed to collect endorsements on paper. It is recommended that the presidential candidates who collect endorsements this way also submit the ID numbers (kennitala) of the endorsers in a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel format) in order to facilitate review, but the original data must be submitted when announcing their candidacy. The list will be entered into the system on Ísland.is when the candidate deadline ends for review and to check whether individuals have recommended two candidates, in which case both endorsements are invalid. A template for the entry is available at kosning.is.

The National Electoral Commission will accept candidate announcements on April 26th, and on May 2nd the candidates will be formally announced.

The collection of electronic recommendations is a joint project of Digital Iceland, the National Electoral Commission and the National Register of Iceland. The National Registry provides assistance with using the system at kosningar@skra.is or by phone at 515 5300.
