Candidacies in the municipal elections

The National Electoral Commission has compiled information about the candidacies for the upcoming municipal elections this spring.

The deadline for submitting candidate lists for the municipal elections this spring expired on Friday, April 10, and all municipal electoral commissions have now confirmed the candidate lists in their respective municipalities. The National Electoral Commission has compiled information about the candidacies for the municipal elections, which are published on kosning.is.

In the municipal elections, list-based voting will take place in 50 municipalities, with 178 candidate lists being presented. A total of 3.156 individuals appear on these lists.

In municipalities where no candidate lists were submitted, unrestricted elections will be held. In such elections, all eligible voters in the municipality are considered candidates unless they are legally exempt from the obligation and have declined in advance. Unrestricted elections will take place in seven municipalities: Ásahreppur, Dalabyggð, Eyja- og Miklaholtshreppur, Fljótsdalshreppur, Grýtubakkahreppur, Kaldrananeshreppur, and Langanesbyggð.

In Kjósarhreppur, Snæfellsbær, Tjörneshreppur, and Vopnafjarðarhreppur, only one candidate list was submitted before the deadline. That list will therefore be elected unopposed in the respective municipality, and no municipal elections will be held there.

Early voting has begun with district commissioners and election officials abroad.
