Basic Intensive Care Nursing Course Held at SAk for the First Time

On March 26–27, a two-day course in the fundamentals of intensive care nursing, Basic for Nurses, was held at the Hospital in Akureyri (SAk).

This is an international course that forms part of the so-called Basic line for healthcare professionals and has been taught widely around the world.

The course has been a regular part of the orientation program for nurses in the intensive care unit at Landspítali for the past ten years, but this is the first time it has been held at SAk.

Two intensive care nursing specialists, Guðrún Jónsdóttir and Þorsteinn Jónsson, came from Landspítali to teach the course. Helga Dögg Jónsdóttir, a nurse in the intensive care unit at SAk, was responsible for organizing the course and also took part in teaching.

“It is extremely positive to be able to host a course like this at SAk,” says Helga Dögg. “Standardized training of this kind is an important element in supporting and strengthening the specialized nursing care provided in the intensive care unit.”

A total of ten nurses who have recently started working in the intensive care unit at SAk attended the course, along with one nurse from the intensive care unit at Landspítali at Hringbraut. The course included both theoretical and practical instruction and concluded with an exam.

According to the results of a survey conducted among participants at the end of the course, it was considered both useful and enjoyable.

“With the introduction of this course at SAk, new opportunities are created to strengthen professional knowledge and support the structured orientation of new nurses in the intensive care unit, which is a key factor in ensuring the safety and quality of care,” Helga Dögg added.
