Appendix to the Right of Use Agreement of Þórkötla regarding accommodation
Starting May 28th, those who have signed a loyalty agreement for their old properties in Grindavík will be able to stay in them. This is a temporary project for a trial period this summer.
Since Þórkatla began offering loyalty agreements, the company has experienced a great deal of interest from 'Hollvinir' in staying at the properties. That interest has grown steadily, but until now it has not been considered justifiable to allow overnight stays. In light of the circumstances and developments in the town, however, a decision has now been made to allow 'Hollvinir' to stay at the properties on a trial basis over the summer, from the end of May to the end of September 2025. The aim of the project is to encourage residents to maintain a connection with the town and thereby increase the likelihood that people will move back to Grindavík when it is considered safe. The authorization is intended for summer stays and not for permanent residence.
The authorization is based on the location, condition and status of fire protection being such that it is safe for people to stay at the property overnight. An administration fee will be charged when the agreement for summer accommodation is signed.
It is hoped that it will be possible to revive a thriving settlement in Grindavík as soon as possible. The people of Grindavík want to return home, either as soon as possible or when the risk has been reduced. Þórkatla believes that the first step in that direction is to allow accommodation for 'Hollvinir'. When conditions permit, the company will rent and sell properties to the people of Grindavík.
Þórkatla has completed the purchase of 943 properties in Grindavík, taken over 919 properties and completed the sale of 904 properties in Grindavík. The company's total investment in the 943 properties that have been disposed of to date is ISK 71.6 billion. Of this, purchase agreement and sale payments are around ISK 50 billion and mortgage loans taken over are around ISK 21.6 billion.
The deadline for individuals to apply for the sale of residential property in Grindavík expired on March 31st, but legislation to extend the deadline to June 30th, 2025, is currently being processed by the Althingi.
You can apply for a right of use agreement (Hollvinasamningur) on the Þórkatla website (www.torkatla.is/hollvinir). All 'Hollvinir' will then be sent an invitation to add a guest permit to their loyalty agreement.
