A path to feeling better – a new handbook for people following a suicide attempt
Lífsbrú – the Centre for Suicide Prevention at the Directorate of Health – has published a new handbook intended to provide support after a suicide attempt. The handbook can help the person who made the attempt, as well as professionals and loved ones.

The period after a suicide attempt can be difficult, marked by uncertainty, strong emotions and many questions about what comes next. The handbook is intended as a guide and source of support for the next steps, allowing each person to choose what suits them and go at their own pace.
The handbook covers, among other things, the importance of seeking help immediately, the first few days after a suicide attempt, support from those around you and from professionals, returning to work or studies, what to do if suicidal thoughts re-emerge, a safety plan, self-care and the future. It also provides an overview of support resources, peer support, emergency assistance and helplines.
The handbook's main message is that recovery takes time and often happens in small steps. With the right support, you can gradually regain your footing and strength. The handbook also emphasises that people do not have to face difficult times alone.
An interdisciplinary group created the handbook in close collaboration with stakeholders. It is published by Lífsbrú – the Centre for Suicide Prevention at the Directorate of Health.
The handbook is available on the Directorate of Health website under “Manuals and advice” and will also be available in print from the Directorate, as with other handbooks and educational material from Lífsbrú. For information, email mottaka@landlaeknir.is.
