Licences for firearms

Registration of a borrowed weapon

If an individual intends to use and possess a firearm owned by another person for a period of more than 4 weeks, an application for a borrowed weapon must be submitted. With said application the owner of the firearm is applying for the firearm to be registered on loan to another person that has a valid firearms license.

Once the application has been approved by the police, the owner of the firearm receives a notification and must confirm that he is lending the firearm to the person in question.

The process is in fact the same as when selling a firearm, except that no change of ownership occurs. Once the process has been completed, the weapon will be visible on the property lists of both parties, the loan recipient and the owner.

In the case of a loan recipient it will be marked as a „weapon on loan“, but with the owner it will be moved to the position „On loan".

A loan authorisation remains in effect until either party notifies the police of the cancellation of the loan authorisation, either contacting the local police force or sending an email to; leyfi@lrh.is
