Residence permit for humanitarian reasons

A residence permits for humanitarian reasons can be granted in two different circumstances:

  • To people who have fled to Iceland from Ukraine and received collective protection.

  • Following the substantive processing of an application for international protection.

Please note that it is not possible to apply for a residence permit specifically for humanitarian reasons.

Passport for foreign nationals

Holders of a a residence permit for humanitarian reasons, granted following the substantive processing of an application for protection, may apply for a passport for foreign nationals for traveling abroad.

Applicants must reside legally in Iceland and be able to demonstrate that they cannot obtain a travel document from their home country or that they are stateless.

Law

The residence permit is granted on the basis of Article74 of the Foreign Nationals Act.
