Grants for plastic surgery

Health insured persons are entitled to grants for necessary plastic surgery.

If payment participation is available, the insured person can obtain the service from a contracted specialist physician who can provide it and it is then subsidised by Iceland Health.

Conditions

A grant is awarded when treatment improves severely impaired physical function caused by birth defects, developmental abnormalities, injuries, infections, tumours or other diseases and when correction of blemishes after wounds or accidents.

Information on the diseases/conditions covered by the payment participation of Iceland Health is in the accompanying document to the regulation.

Amounts

The amounts of grants from the Iceland Health are according to the regulations issued by the Ministry of Health.

Exemptions

If you request an exemption from the conditions of the regulation, you must apply for payment participation in advance to Iceland Health.

An application for an exemption must be accompanied by a certificate from a health care provider or a GP on reduced physical function. A reduced physical function means pain or other impairment of physical function that interferes with daily activities.

Iceland Health assesses whether there is a reduced level of skills that allows the institution to grant an exemption. In the case of services that require hospitalisation, the hospital must decide whether to grant an exemption.
