Icelandic Drone Map - Under Development

We are currently working on an Icelandic drone map to assist drone pilots with flight planning and operations. Until the map is ready, drone users are encouraged to refer to other sources of information, such as:

Flying drones near airports

To obtain permission to fly near scheduled airports, an application must be submitted to the airport operator:

Key Points from Regulation No. 1360/2024

  • Flying unmanned aircraft within 150 meters of sensitive public infrastructure, such as power plants, parliament buildings, presidential residences, ministries, embassies, police stations, prisons, or hospitals, is prohibited unless authorized by the owners or operators.

  • When flying near residential areas or other places where people are present, general rules regarding property rights, privacy, and personal data protection apply.

  • Flying at airports or within airport zones is prohibited without authorization from the airport operator. Within restricted zones around scheduled flight airports, flying is allowed without special permission if the unmanned aircraft is flown below the height of the highest obstacles and within 50 meters of its flight path. At other airports, utmost caution and safety must be observed. Restricted zones around airports are published on the Icelandic Transport Authority website and in the Icelandic Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP).
