De-registration of a vessel from the Ship Register
It is possible to de-register a vessel either domestically or abroad. In order for a vessel to be de-registered, it must be free of debt to the Icelandic Transport Authority (Samgöngustofa) and free of any registered encumbrances with the District Commissioner (Sýslumaður). De-registration will only be carried out if there are clear reasons stated for the request.
If the intention is to re-register the vessel later, an application for re-registration must be submitted once the vessel has been removed from the ship register.
