Coastal cleanup

Grant for coastal cleanup

Grant application for projects that involve the cleaning up of Iceland's coastline are open for legal entities, such as non-profit organization or hobbyist association.

About the project

The project “Icelandic Coastal Cleanup” has been extended for an additional three years, covering the period 2026–2028. The Icelandic Coastal Cleanup project was previously carried out from 2021–2025, with the aim of cleaning the country’s coastline of plastic and other waste. The project was based on action 17 in the government’s action plan on plastics, Úr viðjum plastsins.

Clean seas are extremely important for Iceland, both in terms of nature conservation, biodiversity, and economic activity. Coastal cleanups contribute to the protection of the ocean, raise public awareness of plastic pollution, and strengthen community participation in environmental protection.

Objectives

The purpose of the grants is to ensure that Iceland’s coastline is cleaned in an organized manner, that cleaned beaches are maintained, to increase public awareness of the importance of coastal cleanups and to mobilize interested parties to participate in efforts to clean the coastline.

Conditions

Grant recipients must submit documentation on the progress of each project, as well as quantitative data on the amount of waste collected. This information will be made visible on the project’s website; www.strandhreinsun.is

Grants will be awarded for defined projects and will generally be granted for one year at a time.
