Certification of document translators and court interpreters
The District Commissioner of Vestmannaeyjar handles the national certification of document translators and court interpreters.
A certification exam is held every other year by Þýðingarsetur Háskóla Íslands
Application
Applications with receipt for the payment of the examination fee must be sent to the District Commissioner of Vestmannaeyjar via email skjalathydendur@syslumenn.is or by mail to:

Cost
Examination fee for 2025 is 393.000 ISK for those who are taking the exam for the first time, that is for translating both to and from Icelandic. For those who are taking the exam only to or from Icelandic or retaking the exam the fee is 295.000 ISK.
Included in the price is a introduction meeting and preparation course.

After the exam, a fee must be paid for certificate of validation 12.000 ISK.
Arrangements
The course is held by Þýðingarsetur Háskóla Íslands in Reykjavík.
The introduction meeting will be at classroom V008, Veröld - Húsi Vigdísar on September 19th at 10:00 and online, using Microsoft Teams.
Mandatory preparation classes will be on the following days:
September 19th Introduction meeting 10:00-12:00
October 3rd 10:00-16:00
October 17th 10:00-16:00
October 31st 10:00-16:00
November 14th 10:00-16:00
Written certification exam will be held on February 9th and 10th 2026 (not on Teams)
Legalization for document translation may be granted based on foreign legalization, as long as it includes Icelandic.
