Applying for a passport

You can apply for a new passport for you and individuals under your custody on Ísland.is Login. In the application you pre-register information and then only need to attend a photo appointment with the District Commissioner's Office to be able to issue the passport.

Pre-registration of passport application

Conditions

  • That the validity of the current passport is less than 6 months. Otherwise, you must apply to the District Commissioner. See information about the validity period of passports on My pages.

  • That you have electronic ID.

If an applicant does not have a public identification card, passport, identity card or driver's license, the applicant must accompany two witnesses to the application place of the District Commissioner, complete the authentication of an individual and certify in person that the applicant is who he or she claims to be. Witnesses must have a public identification card, passport, identity card or driver's license.

Application for a child

If two parties are responsible for the custody of a child, they need:

  • both parties to give consent for the issuance of a new passport.

  • both guardians must have electronic ID.

Application process

  1. Pre-register an application on Ísland.is and pay the cost.

    • If a child is involved, another guardian will apply for the passport and pay. The other person will automatically receive a request to approve the application. The approval must be received within 7 days, otherwise the application expires and is automatically refunded to the payer.

  2. Attend a photo shoot within 30 days at the application centres of district commissioners all over the country. It is possible.

    • A valid ID, an older passport, an Icelandic driving licence or a name card must always be presented.

    • It is sufficient that another guardian attends with a child under the age of 18. The guardian must show identification. If a third party comes with the child, he must be presented.

If you do not attend a photo appointment within 30 days, or cancel an application after that time, the applicant must request a refund himself.
