Visa extension

The period of validity and/or the duration of authorized stay of an issued visa may be extended if its period of validity is less than 90 days. You cannot apply for an extension of a visa issued for 90 days.

Generally, a visa may not be extended so that the stay exceeds 90 days in a 180-day period.

Requirements

In order to apply for an extension, the holder must demonstrate that:

• (1) Force majeure or (2) humanitarian reasons prevent the holder from leaving the Schengen area before the period of validity or the duration of authorized stay expires.
  
  Example of force majeure:
  The airline changes the flight schedule at short notice (e.g. due to weather conditions or a strike).
  
  Example of humanitarian reasons:
  The person concerned suddenly becomes seriously ill and is unable to travel, or a close relative living in a Member State suddenly becomes seriously ill or dies.

• (3) Serious personal reasons that justify the extension of the period of validity or the duration of authorized stay.
  
  Example of serious personal reasons:
  The person travels to the Schengen area to collect a family member who has undergone surgery. On the day before the scheduled return journey, the patient’s condition deteriorates and the patient is not allowed to leave the hospital for another two weeks.

Applications can only be submitted electronically by email to visa@utn.is.

Fee

No fee is charged for the extension of a visa due to force majeure or humanitarian reasons.

A fee of EUR 30 will be charged for the extension of a visa for serious personal reasons, if the application is approved.

• Photocopy of passport.

• Photocopy of the current visa.

• Travel medical insurance.

• Letter explaining the request.

• Medical certificate, if applicable.
