Children generally have priority at their designated neighbourhood school.
However, guardians may always apply for a place for their child at another compulsory school within the municipality, outside the municipality, or at an independently operated school.
Application process
When submitting an application, you select the school you wish to apply to and state the reason for the transfer.
Applying for a change of school within a municipality
You can request a transfer between compulsory schools within the municipality where the child has a registered legal domicile.
If the child is moving their legal domicile to another school catchment area, the child has priority at the designated neighbourhood school in that area.
If the application is submitted for other reasons, school attendance is subject to available capacity at the school.
Rules on school catchment areas, applications, and enrolment in compulsory schools are available on the websites of the municipalities.
There is no general application deadline for school transfers within a municipality.
The school applied to will send confirmation of approval or rejection of the application to the guardian.
The child remains enrolled in their current school until the application has been approved and the transfer formally takes effect.
Moving to another legal domicile but staying in the same school
A child who moves between school catchment areas within the same municipality does not need to change schools or apply for continued school attendance.
The child remains enrolled in their current school until the guardian applies for a school transfer and the application has been approved.
Applying to Schools in Another Municipality, Private Schools, or International Schools
Municipal financial participation is a prerequisite for a child to attend:
a school in a municipality other than where the child has a registered legal domicile
an independent school, which is an independently operated compulsory school
an international school, which is an independently operated compulsory school providing instruction in English and based on an international curriculum
Please note that municipalities may differ in whether they set a limit on the number of children for whom financial participation is approved.
The application is valid for one school year at a time.
Processing of applications for municipal financial participation
The application is first submitted to the municipality where the child has a registered legal domicile, which decides on municipal financial participation.
If financial participation is declined, the guardian will receive a response from the municipality along with a reasoned decision.
If financial participation is approved, the application is forwarded electronically to the school applied to.
Processing of applications for school attendance
The school assesses the application and sends confirmation of approval or rejection to the guardian and to the municipality where the child has a registered legal domicile.
Costs
When applying to an independent school or an international school, guardians should be aware of costs that are not covered by municipal financial participation, such as registration fees.
