Apply for foreign disability pension

Application for disability pension/benefits from other EEA states

If you live or have lived and worked in an EEA country, you may be entitled to disability pension from that country.

General information

It is possible to apply for rights in many countries because of disability. Different agreements between countries determine how your rights are transferred between countries.

Rights in one country may not be granted in another.

Different laws apply in different countries. Therefore, there may be different conditions you must fulfill in regards to the foreign institution and the Social Insurance Administration (TR).

If you do not live in Iceland

If you do not live in Iceland when applying, you must contact the social insurance institution in the country where you live.

If you also have rights in Iceland, you must apply for your Icelandic rights with the foreign institution. The foreign institution contacts the Social Insurance Administration (TR).

The Social Insurance Administration (TR) may request more data than you submit to the foreign institution.

You will receive a letter from The Social Insurance Administration (TR) with information on which documents you need to submit and what time limit you have. You can submit documents through My pages of TR.

If you live in Iceland

If you live in Iceland when applying, you must inform the Social Insurance Administration of the rights abroad. The Social Insurance Administration contacts the foreign institution on your behalf.

The foreign institution may request more data than you submit to the Social Insurance Administration. The Social Insurance Administration cannot assist with the collection of this data.
