Afforestation projects on farmlands – Grant application

To participate in government-supported afforestation projects, applicants must submit a completed application form to the designated forestry consultant in their district.

Applications are valid solely for the original applicant and will expire if ownership changes or the contract remains unsigned within one year of approval.

A forestry consultant conducts a site visit to the applicant's property to assess the prospective forest area, which must encompass a minimum of 10 hectares, and subsequently documents their findings.

Following the evaluation, the consultant submits a comprehensive report, including a boundary map, to the division director, recommending whether to proceed with an agreement.

Upon approval of this recommendation, the applicant is required to obtain a construction permit from the relevant municipality.

The forestry agreement may then be executed upon permit approval.

The forestry agreement requires execution within one year of approval; otherwise, the application will expire unless a written deadline extension is requested.

Land and Forest Iceland consultants are responsible for:

• ensuring timely contract processing,

• notifying applicants at least two months prior to application expiration.

Upon receipt of official registration, mapping and planning work can commence.

For negotiated areas bordering geographical boundaries, a proposed outline drawing will be submitted to adjacent property owners.

In the absence of boundary agreement, comments are required within the stipulated timeframe.

Prior to commencing construction, we require confirmation of the construction permit from the relevant municipality.

Prior to project commencement, mandatory basic forestry training is required for all landowners and forestry farmers.
