If you work temporarily in a country outside the EEA and the Intergovernmental Agreement on Social Security is not in place, you can apply to continue your rights in Iceland during your stay abroad.
You and your employer must meet the following conditions:
You work in a country outside the EEA for an Icelandic employer.
The employer usually has its operations in Iceland, hires its staff in Iceland and pays insurance premium in Iceland.
Time period
Rights may be retained in Iceland for up to 1 year.
After the first period, the insurance registration may be extended for up to another 4 years if the conditions are still fulfilled.
