If a child under the age of 18 is admitted to hospital due to his/her illness and there is a distance of at least 20 km between the home and the hospital, parents or guardians may apply for one of the following:

  • Residence costs for one or two parties in the event of difficult treatment of a life-threatening illness

  • Daily trips to visit the child

Application process

To be reimbursed for travel or subsistence expenses:

  1. Doctor or midwife, if applicable, apply for reimbursement of travel costs
    - Doctor or midwife will fill in the form Travel costs report

  2. The applicant shall keep all supporting documents:
    - The form completed by a doctor or midwife
    - Payment receipts for fares or subsistence expenses
    - Confirmation of the hospitalization of the child
    - If both parents request reimbursement of the cost of stay, a medical certificate is also required.

  3. The applicant sends all documents to his/her hometown, and the authorization is to forward them to Iceland Health if necessary.

Amounts

For the cost of stay, 80% of the cost is paid, although never more than 50% of the daily fee to the hospital hotel. If both parents request reimbursement, no more than 75% of the daily fee is paid in aggregate.

For daily trips to visit a child, up to 200 kilometers each way is paid for. If you travel by air, refunds are limited to one trip per week. Reimbursement is generally made for each trip:

  • 2/3 of or fare

  • The cost portion of the applicant (1/3 of the fare) never exceeds ISK 1,500 per return trip.

  • The applicant's share of the costs is reduced to ISK 500. for each trip if its cost exceeds ISK 10,000. during the last 12 months or during the calendar year from 01.01.2024.
