In accordance with Article 120 of the Elections Act No. 112/2021, the National Electoral Commission convened on 22 September 2026 to make rulings on the validity of disputed ballot papers and to announce the results of the referendum held on 29 August 2026 pursuant to paragraph 2 of Article 2 of the Elections Act on whether Iceland should resume accession negotiations with the European Union. In accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 123 of the Elections Act, the result of the referendum is advisory.

The result of the referendum is that 105,338 voters, or 47.2%, voted Yes and 118,047 voters, or 52.8%, voted No. Blank and invalid ballot papers numbered 1,646, or 0.7%.
