Democracy Volunteers Publish Final Report on the Referendum of 29 August 2026

20th October 2026

The international election observation organisation Democracy Volunteers has now published its final report on the referendum held on 29 August 2026.

A delegation of 16 trained observers was deployed by the organisation to monitor the conduct of the referendum at 51 polling stations across Iceland. This was the second occasion on which Democracy Volunteers has conducted election observation in Iceland. On 16 May 2026, a five-member delegation from the organisation observed the municipal elections.

The report states that according to electoral standards of best practice outlined by an array of international conventions and organisations, Democracy Volunteers’ election observers rated 89% of polling stations in Iceland as “very good,” the remainder as “good” and none as “bad” nor “very bad”, which is testament to the outstanding work of electoral administrators across the country.

The report further notes that Democracy Volunteers remains very impressed with the administration of the electoral process in Iceland. Iceland is an excellent example of an organised, efficient, accessible and secret electoral process for democracies around the world to follow.

The National Electoral Commission welcomes the publication of the report and thanks Democracy Volunteers for its visit and its important contribution as an independent international election observation organisation. Assessments conducted by international election observation bodies help strengthen confidence in electoral processes, provide valuable recommendations for improvement and support the continued development and enhancement of Iceland's electoral system.
