National Planning Policy 2015-2026

The parliamentary resolution on the National Planning Policy 2015-2026 was adopted by the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, in March 2016. It sets out a coordinated national planning policy for the first time, as a guide for municipal planning and other planning for land use and regional development. The policy was replaced by the existing national planning policy. The policy documents for the previous policy can be found here:

Enforcing the previous policy

The National Planning Policy 2015-2026 specified various projects that the government was assigned to work on. Of those projects, work had begun or had been completed on the following projects. Here you can access the products that were created during that work.

Mapling the wilderness

The project for mapping the expanse of the highlands was specified in article 1.1.4 of the National Planning Policy 2015-2026. It was entrusted to the National Planning Agency and the Environment Agency to prioritize the regular availability of updated maps of the expansion and development of the highlands. This included determining criteria for the assessment of the expansion from a planning perspective and to have updated maps of the expansion available for planning work by municipalities and other parties. Mapping of infrastructure and services in the central highlands

The project for mapping of infrastructure and services in the highlands was specified in article 1.2.2 of the National Planning Policy 2015-2026. The Planning Agency in cooperation with the National Registry of Iceland and the municipalities in the highlands were assigned to have the primary responsibility for mapping infrastructure and services in the highlands. The mapping was intended to provide a comprehensive overview of existing infrastructure, housing and service provision in the highlands that would be useful in the next revision of the national planning policy. The mapping would also be useful in the processing of other enforcement projects of the national planning policy, such as the analysis of wilderness areas, assessment of the need for development of tourism infrastructure and further policy development on the central highlands road network.
