Visit to the Supreme Court and the National Assembly of Japan

20th November 2023

In November, the Icelandic Law Society organized a trip to Japan. The Supreme Court of Iceland participated in the trip, with five judges and the head of the court’s office.

On Tuesday 7 November, the group visited the Supreme Court of Japan and met with Saburo Tokura, President of the Supreme Court of Japan, and Yasumasa Nakamine, Judge of the Court. The Icelanders were represented by Benedikt Bogason, President of the Supreme Court. He and the President of the Supreme Court of Japan emphasized that while the countries differ in many ways, they are based on the same values, in particular human rights and the protection of the rule of law.

On Wednesday 8 November, the group took a tour of the Japanese National Assembly. The President of the Supreme Court, Ólafur Þór Hauksson, chairman of the Law Society and district attorney, Sigríður Friðjónsdóttir, the State Prosecutor, and Stefán Haukur Jóhannsson, the Icelandic ambassador to Japan, met with Shinako Tsuchiya, the Minister of Reconstruction, and members of the parliament Satoshi Hamada, Mitsuko Ishii and Ryuhei Kawada.
