The Social Insurance Administration increases security with electronic identification in its services

3rd July 2026

The Social Insurance Administration has implemented authentication using electronic IDs and an authentication app for communication with clients. This applies to services provided over the phone, at the service centre and when receiving enquiries.

The purpose of electronic identification for clients communicating with the Social Insurance Administration (TR) is to ensure that only the correct person has access to their own information.

Client security and data protection are a priority at TR, and with electronic identification, we can ensure that the processing of information is always in accordance with the strictest data protection requirements.

Electronic identification will be requested:

  • By phone; clients identify themselves before information is provided

  • At the service centre at Hlíðasmári 11; clients identify themselves before a service representative provides them with information.

  • When responding to enquiries to TR via Contact us on tr.is; where the client identifies themselves electronically before sending the enquiry.

  • By email; where the client will receive a request for identification after sending an enquiry to TR.

In the near future, we will be adding the option for clients to send an enquiry to a service representative via web chat. Electronic identification will also be requested in these communications.

Electronic identification is simple to use and most Icelanders are already familiar with it from daily interactions with public institutions, banks and various companies.

The Social Insurance Administration encourages clients to familiarise themselves with the use of electronic IDs and the identification app from Auðkenni.
