Workshop at SHH - Status of the Icelandic Sign Language
10th February 2026
Last week, a working meeting was held on the status of Icelandic Sign Language.
The meeting took place at the Communication Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, at the initiative of the Icelandic Sign Language Committee and with funding from the Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the working group on the language policy of Icelandic Sign Language, as well as other representatives from the Communication Centre, the Icelandic Association of the Deaf, the Icelandic Sign Language Committee, Hlíðaskóli, and Sólborg Preschool.
Dr. Filipe Venade de Sousa, a professor of law specializing in the rights of Deaf people and the recognition of sign languages, was invited to Iceland to participate in the meeting and to review the status of Icelandic Sign Language and its legal framework in Iceland.
The main conclusion of the meeting was that although significant progress has been made in recent years and decades in support of Deaf people and Icelandic Sign Language, there are still widespread shortcomings in the legal framework, which does not adequately guarantee the language rights of sign language users in Iceland.
