Vacancies for sign language interpreters

The Communication Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing advertises two free positions for sign language interpreters.

Main tasks and responsibilities

The sign language interpreters' work falls under the sign language interpretation division of the Institute. Sign language interpreters' tasks are related to work with Icelandic sign language, primarily sign language interpretation and translations. In addition, they participate in various projects within the organization's field of work that are assigned to them.

Qualification requirements

  • University education in sign language and sign language interpretation.

  • Good command of Icelandic sign language.

  • Good ability in Icelandic, in speech and writing.

  • Good English comprehension is desirable.

  • Driving license desirable.

  • Experience in sign language interpretation is preferable.

  • Initiative and ability to work both independently and in team.

  • Good communication skills, service attitude, punctuality and organizational skills.

The Communication Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is the language center for Icelandic sign language and works for the sign language community in Iceland. We want to hire professionals who have a sincere interest in Icelandic Sign Language and ambition for sign language interpretation. Salary according to the current collective agreement between the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and the Viska union.

Applications must be accompanied by a diploma, a detailed curriculum vitae, information about potential reference, as well as a letter of introduction. The letter of introduction shall explain the reason for the application and how the applicant meets the qualifications of the job.

All job interviews will be conducted in both Icelandic and Icelandic sign language and applicants must be prepared to undergo skill assessment in Icelandic sign language and interpretation.

The work is local and it is expected that it will be done mostly at the organization's workplace and at the interpreting venue in the capital area and in nearby municipalities.

The job includes full-time daytime work (100% position) as well as the possibility of demand-related overtime in the evenings and on weekends. However, part-time work is also possible.
