Reading in Icelandic Sign Language - ÍTM story in a bag
25th August 2025
The Communication Center recently received a Rannís grant, from The Icelandic Innovation Fund for Schools. The grant is for a collaborative project with the kindergarten Sólborg, called Literacy in Icelandic Sign Language – ÍTM story in a bag.
The project “ÍTM story in a bag ” concerns developing methods for story reading and communication in ÍTM through storybooks. A bag will be prepared with objects belonging to a specific story, along with a book of signs, where the key ÍTM signs of the story are presented in a graphic and a child-attractive way. The story will also be recorded in ÍTM and instructions prepared for using the learning material, both in Icelandic and ÍTM. Reading stories in sign language is very important for children's language development, increasing their phonological awareness and vocabulary in sign language, thus supporting literacy. The fairytale Goldilocks and the Three Bears was chosen for the first bag.
