Professor from Norway visits SHH
25th August 2025
On 11th and 12th of August, Professor Lindsay Ferrara, Professor of Sign Language at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, visited us at SHH.
Lindsay has led the project to create a corpus for Norwegian Sign Language (NTS) in recent years. In accordance with the Icelandic Sign Language Action Plan 2024-2027, SHH is working on a project schedule for the corpus for ÍTM, in collaboration with scholars at the Institute of Sign Language Studies. Guðný Björk Þorvaldsdóttir, Head of Research at SHH, and Rannveig Sverrisdóttir, Assistant Professor of Sign Language Studies and Interpretation at the University of Iceland, attended long working sessions with Lindsay here at SHH, and the knowledge she shared with them was very beneficial for the ongoing corpus work in Iceland. Lindsay also gave an open lecture on behalf of the Institute of Sign Language Studies, on feedback in sign language communication in both Norwegian Sign Language (NTS) and French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB). The data on which Lindsay's research was based came from the corporuses of these two sign languages. The lecture was well attended, as it was an interesting opportunity to learn about researches in foreign sign languages and to see what possibilities there will be for using the ÍTM corpus in the future.
