Böðvar and Jósef were schoolmates at the School for the Deaf in Stakkholt. Both were born in 1941 and would therefore have turned 85 this year. They have both passed away; Jósef died in 2012 and Böðvar in 2019.

Böðvar and Jósef were both active members of the Association of the Deaf and can often be seen in informal videos from the association. They also contributed to SHH's work in a more formal capacity by taking part in research projects and interviews. The videos featuring the two friends span approximately 50 years, from the early 1960s to 2010, and are therefore an important part of the history of Icelandic Sign Language (ÍTM). The material includes interviews and personal accounts, as well as travel footage and conversations between friends.

The videos now being published on SignWiki are made available with the permission of Böðvar's and Jósef's families. Their publication forms part of SHH's 2026–2029 strategy and the Icelandic government's 2026–2030 financial plan, which both place an emphasis on preserving the language and ensuring public access to Icelandic Sign Language as part of Iceland's cultural heritage.
