Transfer of the tasks and aquisitions of the Kópavogur Regional Documentary to the National Archives of Iceland
At the meeting of the town council of Kópavogur on April 25, 2023, it was decided that the the collections and projects of the Kópavogur Regional Archives would be transferred to the National Archives of Iceland and subsequently the Kópavogur Regional Documentary would be closed down. At the town council meeting on May 14, 2024, it was decided that private archives would also be handed over to the National Archives for preservation.
Kópavogur and the National Archives have prepared an action plan for the transfer of the project and the collection of archives of the Kópavogur Regional Documentary to the National Archives. Here you can find information and timeliness of the project.

Delivering paper documents and electronic data from the institutions and administration of Kópavogur
The institutions and administration of Kópavogur submit their paper documents for preservation to the National Archives of Iceland. Rules and instructions for submitting paper documents of persons required to submit to the National Archives can be found here.

Counselling on archiving and document management for Kópavogur
The National Archives of Iceland assumes the role of the District Commissioner of the Kópavogur District Council regarding advising the Kópavogur municipal authorities on archival matters and document management. This includes approving case documents, archiving plans and archiving, handling notifications in electronic databases, accepting requests for the receipt of paper documents and deciding through grist of documents.

With the transfer of tasks from the District Archives of Kópavogur to the National Archives, it will be one of the tasks of the Kópavogur Documentation Department to oversee the municipality's records management, to provide internal advice, to issue instructions to employees, to provide education to ensure good administrative practice as well as to have internal supervision of implementation according to rules on records management. The Documentation Department will also be the Kópavogur contact point with the National Archives of Iceland. This includes assistance and advice to Kópavogur institutions and areas in the making of case documents, archiving plans, handling documents and information and general advice on information and documentation and more. Supervision of the archives and records management of Kópavogur
The National Archives of Iceland will be the supervisor of the archives and records management of Kópavogur, as per Article 13(4) of Act No. 77/2014 on Public Archives. The National Archives conduct supervision, including electronic surveillance surveys, surveillance visits and initiative observations. Receipt of private archives from individuals, organisations and companies in Kópavogur

Services provided by the District Archives of Kópavogur until 1 December 2026
Collection from the collection of the Kópavogur Regional Archives
The District Archives of Kópavogur handles documents from the library's paper collections that had been received by the library as of March 31, 2024. From December 1, 2026, the library's collections will be transferred to the National Archives of Iceland and the responsibility for handling them will be transferred to the National Archives. Persons who request access to documents from the library's collections, copies or have queries related to documents in the library's custody should therefore contact the District Archives of Kópavogur at 441 9600 or via email.
